Wandering Willows Review

What do you do when your transportation crashes and takes you to some sort of fantasy island with animals you’ve never see before? Wandering Willows is a RPG Mac game, where like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, you land in a foreign land, and need to find your way home by repairing the hot air balloon.

To begin your adventure you must customize your avatar. The options for your appearance are gender, skin color, hairstyle, eye shape, eye color and glasses. My person looked surprisingly close to my appearance. It is a lot like building your WII people. When you land on the ground you are assigned an unusual looking pet who follows you around and will climb trees for you. He will also charm other animals for their goods like wool. These animals all strike a familiar look of Pokemon creatures. Let’s hope most are friendly like Pikachu.

The first person you meet has a question mark over his head. That’s when someone wants to talk to you. When you click on that person, you will usually get a task before they are willing to help you repair your balloon and leave. Luckily this person will let you use his garden after you grow a few things for him. All you need to do is click on a patch of the dirt, select the seeds for whatever you need, water, wait and harvest. This is an important part of the game because you will be returning there for many things like feeding your pet when his energy level is low, and for others tasks.

This person will send you to another person with a question mark above their head. The next person may need something to wear before they will sew up your balloon or may be the editor of the local newspaper who will need ink and paper for his press. This is where your beloved pet comes in handy. He will dig mounds to uncover the necessary supplies or climb trees for fruit and honey. Each mound has a difficulty level and your pet must be trained with the easier mounds initially. Also he can only climb the small trees at first. Keep working and feeding him and he’ll eventually get better at the more difficult levels. In addition he’ll stay loyal as long as you feed him his favorite foods. Other needs may be bought at the shop with willowbees (the local money). If you do not have enough money, you can sell some of the things you grow and scavenge.

Hovering at the top bar will tell you when to find it, and also the checklist at the bottom of the screen will help you. For instance when you need to make a sweater, it will let you know you need wool (your pet will have to charm an animal to get that) and thread (buy at shop). The map at the upper right of the screen will show you who wants to talk to you by gold stars.

You have 9 goals to fix your balloon, even though everyone on the island will tell you you will not want to leave, a lot of pets to collect and train, and surprise to look forward to in this game. I had fun making my little character with green eyes and enjoyed the play with the cute, colorful animals. It is a entertaining RPG play for children and casual gamers. It’s not your Kivi’s Underworld, but a completely different fun role play with plenty of tasks to complete.
