He is a ghostly spirit asking you to find who murdered him in the New Hampshire hills while in the presence of President Franklin Pierce, his long time college friend. The story intertwines facts with fiction. Hawthorne is from Salem, Massachusetts where the witch trials in its heyday were centered making this a great setting.

The hidden object/seek and find part of this game interlaces the objects and the story to keep your interest high. You not only do HOGs but you also talk to ghosts who will give you information. You click on the spirit you want to speak to, click on the phrases at the bottom of the screen to get them to talk to you. The HOGs are your typical scenes with many items scattered around. You click on an item on the list below, and if you need help, click on the object and the shape will appear in the lantern to the right. If you still need help, click on the hint button and the crow will show you exactly where the object is. Find crows in the scenes to get additional hints. You follow the arrows to go from scene to scene. Also in the scenes you look for the clovers. There are 50 clovers in the entire game. There are inventory items you need to find so you can use them for different tasks like lighting a fire with a match. Some items will need to be combined to use. There are 2 boxes where you place the inventory items and then click on the plus symbol to combine the 2 items like the handle of a shovel with the head. When the cursor changes to an eyeball that is an area of interest to investigate further. The gear symbol will let you know you need to use an inventory tool to complete. You may have the tool on your list but may still have to find it. Be on the look out for sparkles to give you more information. When the journal is sparkling, click on it to see any recent news.

Throughout the story there are many related mini games to accomplish. You will need to open gates, unlock doors and safes to further your investigation. After a time you can skip a puzzle if you like, but most of the games are interesting and not very difficult in the beginning.
