The last time I considered doing a jigsaw puzzle was a number of years ago after returning from Paris when someone gave me a box with that city as the subject and in 1000 pieces. The thought of counting the 1000 items to begin the puzzle was too daunting, and the box still sits somewhere in the closet unopened. I had my doubts about doing this Mac game Jigsaw Puzzle-Landscapes, but after doing the puzzles, found it both relaxing and enjoyable.

This packet of puzzles is on nature scenes and cities. All the puzzles are beautifully photographed and a pleasure to view. It downloads on your hard drive in applications so it differs a little from other Mac games. Once you open the puzzle it displays the pieces scattered on the screen. There are 8 different backgrounds for the desktop and 3 types of wood to choose from. There are many options to view the game, and you have to play around with it a little to suit your taste. You can zoom in and out of the scene or use the split screen function. You can drag pieces from one view to another easily. You do not have to count the pieces, but at the very end of the puzzle I was missing a piece. If you search around a bit in different views, you can find it.

The puzzles with less than 100 pieces will be good for young kids to start off and progress to the higher levels later when they master the game. Actually I think the 40 piece puzzles are very relaxing and interesting to put together plus the scenes were all gorgeous. Anything over 100 pieces gets challenging just organizing the many parts based on the shade of color. I like to do the corners and the border first then tackle the center of the picture. Everyone has their own technique to use when it comes to jigsaws, and even though you are working on the computer, you tend to go back to your cardboard piece methods. The only thing I miss on the computer puzzles is the elation you feel when you snap the correct pieces together, and pushing down the last piece of the puzzle. The game tries to make up for it by using noises when the pieces come together. An advantage to a computer puzzle is you do not have to find a table or space for a period of time. Everything is on your computer; nice and neat.
