Inner Quest Review

Sometimes you feel like playing a hidden object, puzzle, rpg or a match 3 game, and if you feel like playing a match game, try the latest one Inner Quest. South Winds Games came out with this simple and relaxing match 3 game. Is that possible? Most match games are intense and timed so you need to be up on your play to complete it in the span given.

Instead of the usual clashing of gems, in Inner Quest it’s a squishy softer sound with upbeat music. There are many levels in each section so when the music repeats itself over and over, it gets a little repetitive but can be turned off if you wish. However each section is divided into several geographic areas and the music for each part is appropriate to its surroundings.

The play is to choose either relaxed or arcade (timed) so if you are competitive, choose the timed mode and post your highest score. The swapping of tokens to match 3 or more of the like items is easy to do and does not stick or hamper your play in any way.

The 100 levels increase in difficulty over time with some simple puzzle matches you must make to complete in a certain way to destroy all the tiles. If you do not do this puzzle correctly, you’ll be left with blank tiles and your only option will be to click on the do over flask on the lower left side of the screen. The redo flask is the clue to the level that you need to do more than just match 3. Once you figure it out, it’s simple.

There are many power ups that will enhance and further your play. Keep an eye out for the pulsating and electric tokens. Make matches with them and see half the board fly off, a row or column will disappear. The flask on the lower left is the multiple hints button. It will show you where many of the matches can be made. A flask with an x will allow you to clear one tile. Of course, if you are stuck and wait a few seconds, it will show you where there is a match. You really cannot fail in this game because at the end if you have a few tiles to clear and you are taking a long time, the tokens will start flying off and clear your screen.

The blocks are tokens with either one or more clips, showing you how many matches you must make before you can use the token. To complete the level you must clear the tiles and depending on what color the tile is, you may need to make more than one match over the tile. Also the game will outline the tiles you need to clear so you can strategize and move those particular tiles. This outline is helpful since the tiles are pastel color and sometimes difficult to make out.

The grid motif went along with the simple, but colorful background scenery. There is a snowflake for the ice scenes, a wagon in the western frontier and a fish for the tropical settings. These shapes help make the game more playful and fun. Yes, the scenes are extremely simple, but they are charming in their own way. It reminds you of a very neat coloring book.

Inner Quest is a great basic game to have for both children and some casual match 3 players. I think it will be good for new players who want to get into match play. It is entertaining with all the tokens flying off the board and the constant movements of the items. The game is advertised as a relaxing (if played untimed) game you can stop any time and return to over and over. I found that to be true. You can exit easily and quickly (unlike some other games) and enjoy a short or long play any time you have available. And, for the price, you can’t beat it. Try it out and have fun making matches.
