Diner Dash 5: BOOM Review

How many Diner Dashes can you take? Is it still as fresh as the first 4? Does it still work? The answers to these questions are 5, yes and yes. Mac sim time management game Diner Dash 5: Boom is still fun and entertaining as the others.

Flo is as upbeat as ever and continues to work her diner like a pro. Someone sabotaged Flo’s iconic diner by changing the fat-free food sign to free food that attracts way too many hungry folks to the café causing an enormous explosion blowing the building into small pieces. The evil Mr. Big is Johnny-on-spot offering to buy Flo’s land with the destroyed diner. She has to rebuild quickly in order to hang on to her precious diner or lose it to that parasitic vermin.

The play is almost identical to the earlier versions of the Dash series with some additions and changes. You click on the group of people waiting in queue and drag them to an available table. Match the number of customer to the number of seats and match the colors for bonus points. Wait for them to look over the menu and when they put their menus down, click on the table to take their order. Click on the ticket station so Flo can take the order to that spot and the chef will prepare the food. You wait for the domed food to appear and then click on each plate to deliver to the appropriate table. After the party finishes, they will look up from their empty plates. You click on the table to collect the payment and click again to clear the table. Click again on the dirty dish tray so Flo can dump the plates there. Simple, right? Wait until there are more items added to your many duties like impatient customers, salad bar, drink dispensers, and adding townies just hanging out to fill an empty seat with their friends. As you know from the other games or maybe you don't, the clients keep coming from doctors, businesswomen, construction workers, lawyers, young girls and even clowns. They all have their own quirky personalities so watch out and work as fast as you can. A new addition like to the tasks is the rain. When it rains, customers want the umbrellas up to keep them dry (another click added to your already filled dance card).

This all takes place in a frantic and speedy play that we have all come to know so well. Your only reprieve is when you are in between levels. You make decisions on the rebuilding project taken on by Hal, Flo’s loyal patron. Also upgrades are available at exorbitant prices to make chef cook faster, faster shoes for Flo, automatic umbrellas and more. Also Flo gives back and takes care of her community by cleaning the city, upgrading the sidewalks, going green by planting foliage and a mystery upgrade.

Even with the basic play intact, the characters all familiar and the background colorful, Diner Dash 5 is just as pleasurable to play as the very first Dash. Fans will know what I’m talking about and people new to the Dash family will get to know and enjoy the play. One word of caution or a few words actually is the frenetic fast paced action of this and all the games in this series. If you want a relaxing play, this is not the game. It doesn’t even have a relax mode, only the tutorial. It starts off easy and slowly, but will soon you will find why the developers call it DASH. Have a good workout playing Diner Dash 5 and good luck, you are going to need it.
