Mechanicus Review

Calling all physic-based puzzle gurus. You know who you are, don’t deny it. Mac game Mechanicus will challenge your brain in a fun way with its many levels of puzzles using platforms, blocks, balls, mirrors, lasers, teleporters, anti-gravity devices and more. It will be your job to move items from point A to point B. This is not a new concept, but it is done in a fun way to keep you interested and happy.

Gravity may or may not be your friend in this game. Use it to your best advantage. There are some instructions but they are sometimes hard to decipher, however, you can figure it out quickly on your own. The game starts out simply but will eventually get more difficult and challenging. You will begin with a few platforms to use to get an item down to a location at the bottom of the screen. It may be logs or barrels that can roll down if you place the given platforms (at the left of the screen) at the correct angle. When you click on the platform, a circle will appear with different actions you can take with the item like angle it to your left or right. The problem may arise when you need to place a soccer ball in a pail. Balls bounce! You have to place your boards to block these diabolical objects from jumping out of a pail. Once you set up your items how you think will work properly, click on the Go button to your left at the bottom of the controls. Hopefully, everything will go as you planned. Other items you may need to place are mirrors, dynamite, teleporters, and anti-gravity devices. Each have their own problems and challenges you must solve to complete a level. For example, the laser beam bounces off mirrors at an angle so you will need to figure out the correct radius for it to reach your target.

An unlikely person will train you to become a Space Warrior in order to protect your home planet from alien invaders that are much more powerful than you. They may be stronger and have better muscle power, but you have brains to overcome anything. You begin your training by moving logs, removing debris and other menial jobs before you can use serious weapons.

Of course, the story is not important in this addictive puzzler but it is minimal and fun. Ignore the writing and get to work on this challenging and interesting game. The artwork is simple, colorful and good. The music starts off playfully, but it gets annoying quickly. They should have decreased the sound or changed the music when you are trying to concentrate on the puzzle. If you are a fan of physics-based puzzlers like Bob Came in Pieces, And Yet It Moves, Cats Inc., Paper Munchers and Mummy’s Treasures, you will like Mechanicus. Take a chance and try this entertaining game. One warning: if you exit and start again, you will be back at the first level. Oh……..

Features of Mechanicus:
-Colorful, Fun Artwork
-Save the Planet in 5 Chapters!
-Physics-Based Puzzlers, 8 Mini Games

Cats Inc. Review

Cat lovers rejoice! Here’s a Mac platform puzzler with 3 mischievous cats that get into everything and everywhere. Figure out how to get these 3 cats pass the obstacles and get the scrumptious sausages in this fun physics based game.

You use the 3 cats with 3 different skills to overcome the many different blocks. The goal is to get all the sausages by getting one of the cats to jump and snag one of these delectable treats. The cats’ faces are at the top left of the screen. When you click on one of them, you can use your arrow keys to make that particular feline move about. The right and left keys move the cats horizontally and the up arrow makes them jump. The yellow fat cat can muscle his way through most barriers like boxes, walls and more. The blue sleek cat jumps high but has problems getting through low spaces. The red kitten can go through these areas because of its size. Alternate the cats and you can succeed in getting the plumb brown sausages and get to the exit. All 3 cats must reach the exit to end the level.

The many obstacles can be a challenge but once you figure out the play, it becomes relatively easy. The wall with the knobs is a door and the only way the cats can open it is to move an heavy object on top of the automatic button located near the entrance. A stack of crates is no problem for the heavy set cat who can move tall barriers and topple them so the rest of the crew can go through. The cats will travel through different locations in the city including the sewer system in order to find food.

This puzzler is a fun, easy game to play. The 2D artwork is delightful and the cats are reminiscent of the felines in those famous Disney movies. They have personalities to match their amazing skills. The music is a joyful, goofy upbeat tune that makes you feel like playing the game. It may be more of a challenge for children but adults may enjoy the cute aspect of this puzzle. Try it out and help the cats get to the yummy sausages by working together.

Features of Cats Inc.:
-30 Levels of Puzzles
-Cats with Skills
-Happy Music and Great Artwork

Paper Munchers Review

What is it with physics based puzzlers and puzzles in general that keep you playing over and over until you get it right? You know what I mean. There’s not too much to the game but you can’t stop. Think Angry Birds, ThrowUp and Mummy’s Treasures, just to name a few great puzzles. Mac game Paper Munchers is a fun game involving monsters and falls into the category of addictive puzzlers.

There are 5 different environments in Paper Munchers from starry night, desert, underwater, icy snow and green jungle. These 5 worlds have 15 levels each. The goal for every level is to feed the wide mouth Paper Munchers. The number of large eyed little monsters you need to get into the Munchers is located at the top of the screen. You need to try to place the same color little monsters into the same color Munchers to get more bombs. You begin with so many bombs to place in the perfect location to blow up the little monsters into the waiting mouths. Getting more bombs is a must if you want to complete the more difficult levels. When you are out of bombs, the level is over. If you fail, you can start over or go on to different levels. You can also redo a level for a higher score.

The levels begin easily but get challenging quickly. Be sure to start with the first level to get the instructions. Placing the bomb in just the right position is important to pop the little monsters into the mouths. Placing it next to a little monster will only move the yummy morsels sideways. Placing it below and a little askew will move it up and to the right or left. Figuring out the correct vector for the path of the little monsters will take some practice and patience but that’s what makes this game fun.

The colorful paper torn look of the landscapes and the monsters are done on an appealing manner. The sound effects, although done well, the burping when you pass a level is a bit much for me. The music is good. Other than the satisfying your stomach sounds, this game is a fun and enjoyable. Play this innovative, colorful and simple game and see if you can feed the hungry Munchers enough little monsters to satisfy their appetites.

Features of Paper Munchers:
-75 Levels
-5 Different, Colorful Environments
-Physics Based Puzzles

Mummy’s Treasures Review

I think I’m partial to logic, physics based puzzles. I like almost all of them. Mac game Mummy’s Treasure is no exception. It makes you work on the puzzle, not aimlessly click as fast as you can on as many things possible, using your brain power and some help from your keyboard. Let your mental power take over to solve each level in a meditative fashion. The results are fantastic whether you complete the puzzle or not. When you make a mistake, it will let you know how to resolve the puzzle by seeing the many objects falling one way or another. It may take one try or several but you will figure it out eventually. Amazing!

This puzzle looks so simple you think you might get bored with it quickly, but you don’t. It keeps you hanging on until you have found the solution. It grows on you and gets very, very addictive. And, after solving an extremely difficult level, you have the satisfaction or “high” of getting “it”. Nothing less and nothing more. Why does this game grab me so much? This game makes you think and want to figure out the right method to the right path.

The story is short and simple. You are in search of the untold treasures in a lost temple. This pharaoh’s tomb holds more riches than you can imagine and you are on the fast track to retrieving all the gems and gold. In order to get the riches you play many levels of puzzles. If you succeed, you get the gold and treasure pieces, but fail and you can retry the level.

The play is simple. In each level you will see gold pieces, mummies, skeleton heads and stone blocks on various size platforms. In addition you must find gems hidden in one of the abovementioned pieces. All you need to do is click on a piece and a jewel may fly out and float to the top of the screen. You need to click on it before it disappears. Easy at first but in later levels it gets more difficult to click on and in time. The goal of each level is to keep the gold pieces on a platform and get rid of the mummy and skeleton heads. You can click on stone platforms to dissolve and watch whatever is on top topple over and drop down off the screen. Some of the pieces like the skeleton head and stone block will fly off the board after you click on it. The mummy heads will just growl when clicked. The gold masks will also stay put when clicked. In later levels the stationary pieces and platforms will start moving back and forth making keeping the gold pieces on the screen extremely difficult. Other factors making this game harder is when the faces are turned to the sides, gravity will pull in that direction so be prepared to see pieces flying sideways and upside down.

Mummy’s Treasure is a fantastic puzzler and will stump you in many levels, but you can skip levels if you want. However, I do not advise it. You will eventually figure out the answer by resetting the puzzle. Keep at it and you will know what to do. If you are into physics based puzzles, check out this original and challenging game for a good time.

Features of Mummy’s Treasure:
-3 Chapters of Searching for Treasures
-20 Levels in each Chapter
-Physics Based Logic Game

Rating: ★★★½☆

And Yet It Moves Review

And Yet It Moves is an unusual name for a unique and different physics based platform game. Although visually simple with its paper mache like appearance the landscapes of caves, trees, mountains and volcanoes are brightly colored and well done. The play itself is also simplistic but can be challenging and fun.

You need to use 2 hands to move your character around. Use the letter A to move him left, W for jumping, D to move him right. The arrow keys will rotate the entire screen. This will take a little practice since most platform games move you in one direction jumping over obstacles. In this game you may need to move the screen 90 degrees to avoid blocks, move another 90 degrees to advance your play and possibly go all the way around.

Blocks will come up and rotating the world may not be enough to clear the path. Rocks may rotate with you and possibly hit you over the head, sending you back to the beginning of the section. There are bats, a toad, bees, chimps and bananas to deal with. Some paths are easier to figure out than others but you can take your time and solve the puzzle when it comes up. This puzzle will take you up, down, upside down, climbing walls and ceilings. The shadow person will point the way and you only need to do is get to the next checkpoint. If you should fail, you will break into many pieces and return to the previous checkpoint.

There are not a lot of levels in this laid back game. 20 levels to be exact, but when you complete a level, you feel great and want to keep going in this addictive and fun platform game. Just watch out for the moving platforms in this puzzle with a tremendous twist to it. Just reach your goal! I give it a 3.5 for a great challenging platformer with a big, big twist. Turn your world upside down!

Features of And Yet It Moves:
-20 Mind Bending Levels
-Platform Fun with a Twist
-Obstacles to Overcome

Rating: ★★★½☆
